9 Ways to Manage Your Stress

While a little stress is a positive force that will push you to act and move forward, everybody knows that too much stress has a detrimental effect on one’s health and let’s face it sanity.

I have explained elsewhere on this website, the effects of stress on the human body and mind. So here are the 9 tips that you can use to keep being overwhelmed by stress.

  1. Take good care of yourself. Exercise and healthy eating will push endorphins through your system, and will keep you calm and happy. So get moving!
  2. Have a positive outlook. I don’t necessarily adhere to the positive thinking movement, yet, if you can become a “glass half full” kind of person, you will be able to see the silver lining on every cloud.
  3. Laugh often. Laugh lightens the mood, there is not question about it. And when you laugh, a deep belly laugh, at that moment, you are not stressed. So the more you laugh, the less you are stressed. So get those comedy DVDs out, or meet with your friends and … laugh!
  4. Learn how to relax. Ok, this is more personal, and relaxing may have a different meaning for each individual. I knew one person who would go and box in order to relax. She explained that once she had given her all on the ring, she did not have the energy to be tensed… It can be sport, it can be through family relationships, it can be through meditation, it can be … The list goes on… Of course, because I am an EFT coach, I would have to suggest EFT, because EFT is proven to reduce Stress. But it is just something that you have to learn to do and be able to perform on a moment notice, (see point 6)
  5. Make time for activities you enjoy. Life is always busy, but if you don’t make time, even 5 minutes in a day for something YOU like. Something that you are going to look forward to. Something just for You. It could be anything that makes you feel good. and Stop feeling guilty, those activities will help you carry forward with the activities that are less pleasurable. Keep that in mind.
  6. Learn to recognize when you’re stressed. We all have moments that are more difficult than other to handle. We all have triggers that will send us immediately to being “over-tensed”. So it is important to be self aware so that you can take the steps to de-escalade tension when it occurs. You might be able to recognise the physical aspect of being stressed. The tension in your body, the way to heart beat,… or it might be more psychological, the way to your thinking goes, the ideas that run through your head without you having any control… Or it might be recognising an attitude that betrays your level of stress. Which ever it is, if you are aware that those signs means that you are stress, you can then take steps to alleviate the situation.
  7. Focus on the things you can control. Live can be very hopeless if one tries to control it. One can not control life… It is as simple as that. Yet, it does not mean, you have no control what so ever. You have control, you have choice about how to react to what life has in store for you. And therefore, you have control about how you feel! It is very little, but it is huge. It can literally change your life. Think about it! You only have control on yourself! Nobody or nothing else, really!
  8. Get organised at home. Stress can appear in the form of clutter at home or in your office. A cluttered life is a stressful way to live. A clean and organise living or working environment will provide you with feeling of calm and control.
  9. Simplify your life. Finally, if you feel that you are overwhelmed in your life, it is time to think about is happening in your life and prioritize. What is important and what is not? Easier say than done, thrust me! But if you feel that you are constantly running, that you are always short of time, that you feel overwhelmed by what you need to achieve in a day, then, make a list of what you have to do, and rank those items… Then go through the list and eliminate the last few, reschedule those items, or simply scratch them off that list. By having a list, you actually have clarity, you also have the chance to tick items off that list and feel good about achieving things. And you know what you have to do and you know that you will be able to do everything. Control and therefore less stress.

 

And the most important tip!

 

I always add one more to the list, one item that I feel everybody should learn about, even or especially the kids, that’s why for me this one is not mandatory!

  • Deal with emotions when they arise. Emotion can be so scary, can make us feel weak and out of control, so it does not control you. If you don’t deal with your emotion, you will have to push them down, you will have to avoid them. This requires a level of energy that you won’t have to deal with something else. So, if you learn to deal with your emotion, through meditation, CBT, EFT or even traditional speech therapy, then you will have to pay the price: More stress and more energy been thrown out the window of your life. If you address the emotions effectively when they arise, then you will have a lesser emotional baggage and you will be stronger… I know that it is common to think that showing emotion is a sign of weakness. We all have emotions, but if we deal with them as quickly as possible, their impact and their toll on our life can be minimal. And that, just there, is Freedom.

This is a long list, I always advise people that ask to add to their routine, to take on a tip and apply it, and see if it works for them. THEN, add a second item, and so on and so forth. The point is not to STRESS about this list. Really, what would be the point?!

It is just a guide completely common sense, except, with modern life and all our responsibilities and all, we forget about common sense and we forget to deal with stress.
